Daniel Andrews has lost control of population growth and its hurting local community sport in the Macedon Ranges.
Victoria’s population is growing at around 150,000 people a year, but over 15 years of Labor Governments there hasn’t been the matching investment in local community sports.
In the Macedon Ranges the local population has grown by around 10,000 people in the last decade but there’s been no extra funding for local sport clubs to cater for this growth.
As a result, local suburban and country sport clubs facilities are rundown and stretched.
While local grassroots sports have struggled with this local population growth but no extra facilities, the Andrews Labor Government wrote the AFL – the richest sporting organisation in the country – a $225 million cheque to upgrade Eithad Stadium.
A Liberal Nationals government will put suburban and country sport clubs before rich elite sports.
That’s why an elected Liberal Nationals Government will spend $15 million to start work on the Macedon Ranges Sports Hub and the New Gisborne Regional Sports Fields. The indoor sports hub is to be used for sporting clubs, a dance studio and an auditorium for large events. The indoor facility could also be used by outdoor sports in times of inclement weather. The Sports Fields’ two new ovals will incorporate grass and synthetic playing surfaces for football, cricket, and soccer; netball and tennis courts; outdoor recreation spaces and a brand new pavilion.
This modern facility will also have the capacity to be used as a Neighbourhood Safety Centre during major emergency response scenarios.
Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:
“Labor MPs in Macedon have sat on their hands for years while this population growth put pressure on local sport clubs and have only just started to show any interest.
Amanda Millar has been leading the campaign for this funding and it’s because of the work of her and the local sports clubs that Labor have suddenly rushed out and supported her plan for the Macedon Ranges Sports Hub.
Only a Liberal Nationals Government will provide our community sports clubs with the backing they need to get back in control and build the facilities they need to support local population growth.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Sport, Danny O’Brien:
“With more and more Victorians wasting time stuck in traffic congestion or on our failing public transport, it’s never been harder to get exercise and keep fit.
But instead of supporting local community sport clubs to provide better facilities to help people get exercise, Daniel Andrews wrote the AFL a cheque for almost a quarter of a billion dollars.
Only a Liberal Nationals Government will put community sport clubs before rich elite sports like the AFL.”
Comments attributable to Liberal candidate for Macedon, Amanda Millar:
“Daniel Andrews and Labor have lost control of population growth.
In the Macedn Ranges the local population has grown by around 10,000 people in the last decade but there’s been no extra funding for local sport clubs to cater for this growth.
As a result, our local sport clubs have been forced to do more with less.
That’s why I have been working hard with our local sport clubs to find the financial support needed for this important community infrastructure.
There’s more work to be done but this is a good start to get back in control of the pressure local population growth has put on community sport.”
